Notice period calculator

Statutory notice runs in one direction more generously than the other: your employer owes you up to 12 weeks depending on service; you owe them just 1 week (unless your contract says more — it usually does).

Your contract can only improve on these floors. If it's silent, the statutory figures apply. Notice pay is at your normal rate; if you're ready and willing to work through notice you must be paid even if there's no work.

Common questions

Can my employer pay me instead of making me work notice?
Yes — payment in lieu of notice (PILON) if the contract allows it (or by agreement). PILON is taxable in full and ends employment immediately, which also stops holiday accruing.
Do I have to work my notice if I'm made redundant?
Generally yes, unless you agree otherwise or take PILON. During redundancy notice you're entitled to reasonable paid time off to look for work (if you have 2 years' service).
What notice do I give when resigning?
The statutory minimum is 1 week after a month's employment — but check your contract first; 4 weeks or a month is typical, and senior roles often carry 3 months. The contract wins if longer.
Does garden leave count?
Yes — garden leave is worked notice from home: full pay, benefits continue, holiday accrues, and you remain employed until the end date.
