Shared parental leave (SPL) converts unused maternity entitlement into a family pot: whatever's left of 52 weeks' leave and 39 weeks' pay when the mother curtails her maternity leave, shareable in blocks between both parents.

The trade every couple should price

The mother's first 6 weeks of SMP pay 90% of her salary with no cap; every week of ShPP pays at most £194.32. Curtailing before week 6 gives up the most valuable weeks in the system — so almost every optimal plan has the mother keeping at least 6 weeks, and SPL starting after. Occupational schemes change the maths again: NHS full-pay weeks are worth even more.

Common questions

Can both parents be off at the same time?
Yes — unlike maternity + paternity, SPL blocks can overlap completely. A couple can take 25 weeks each simultaneously, or interleave.
Is there an SPL equivalent of the 90% weeks?
No — every ShPP week is flat-rate. That's the single biggest reason to keep the mother's first 6 SMP weeks out of the shared pot.
How do SPLIT days work?
Each parent on SPL can work up to 20 'shared parental leave in touch' days without ending the leave — on top of the mother's 10 KIT days during maternity leave.
Does SPL work with adoption?
Yes — identical structure: adoption leave/pay curtails into SPL/ShPP, with the placement date replacing the birth.
